Bible verses for encouragement

Encouragement means to put courage into someone. The writers of these verses were often exiles, grieving or under pressure, so they do not offer cheap cheer. They point to a God who is close, and to people who can carry you. Start with the group that fits today, and share a verse with someone who needs it.

When you feel discouraged

Psalm 42 is a man talking to his own soul, asking why it is so heavy, and then answering himself with hope in God. He does not pretend the heaviness is gone. Isaiah 43:2 was spoken to Israel and says water and fire will come, but you will not face them alone. Honest feelings and real hope can sit side by side.

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit.

Psalms 34:18

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.

Psalms 42:11

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you go through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched; the flames will not set you ablaze.

Isaiah 43:2

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13

When you feel alone

Moses spoke Deuteronomy 31:8 to Joshua, who was about to lead a nation without him. The comfort was not a plan but a presence: the Lord goes ahead. David wrote about the dark valley and said what mattered was that God was with him there. Paul closes the case in Romans 8 with a list of everything that cannot separate you from God's love.

The LORD Himself goes before you; He will be with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.

Deuteronomy 31:8

The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing.

Zephaniah 3:17

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Psalms 23:4

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39

Encouraging someone else

The New Testament treats encouragement as a normal habit, not a special gift. Paul tells the Thessalonians to keep building each other up. Hebrews was written to believers under pressure and asks them to meet, spur one another on, and speak up daily before discouragement hardens. A short, kind sentence can matter more than you expect, as Proverbs says.

Therefore encourage and build one another up, just as you are already doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:24-25

But exhort one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

Hebrews 3:13

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Proverbs 16:24

When you need hope for what's ahead

Jeremiah 29:11 is a letter to exiles in Babylon who were told to settle in and wait; the hope was real, but it was long. Psalm 126 remembers a return from exile and says those who sow in tears will reap with joy. Romans 8:28 and 5:3-5 do not call suffering good. They say God is at work in it.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11

And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.

Romans 8:28

Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.

Romans 5:3-5

Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy. He who goes out weeping, bearing a trail of seed, will surely return with shouts of joy, carrying sheaves of grain.

Psalms 126:5-6

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Bible verse for encouragement?

Many people turn to Isaiah 41:10, Joshua 1:9 or Psalm 34:18. For a low day, Psalm 34:18 is a good start: the Lord is near the brokenhearted. For encouraging a friend, try 1 Thessalonians 5:11.

What does the Bible say about encouraging others?

It treats it as a daily habit. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says to encourage and build each other up, and Hebrews 3:13 says to do it every day. Hebrews 10:24-25 ties it to meeting together.

What Bible verse can I send to someone who is struggling?

Keep it short and kind. Psalm 34:18, Deuteronomy 31:8 and Romans 15:13 work well. Add a line about why you thought of them. A personal note often helps more than the verse alone.
